About Us

SPCA Assisi was established in 1996 by Frank Richter who realised the need for a animal welfare organisation in the Kouga Region. Our Society is one of over (90) 80 Societies in South Africa and (9)10 within the Eastern Cape.

We are the only SPCA in the world to carry the name of the patron saint of domestic animals: “Francis of Assisi”.

How can I help?

The Five Freedoms

All SPCAs in South Africa believe that an animal’s well-being should be considered in terms of the Five Freedoms which form a logical and comprehensive framework for the assessment of animal welfare.

Freedom from hunger and thirst

By ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.

Freedom from discomfort

By providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

Freedom from pain, injury or disease

By prevention, rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Freedom to express normal behaviour

By providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.

Freedom from fear and distress

By ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
